Moving on through the Japanese Kit Kat portion of the stash, I picked at random the Yuzu and Pepper variety. This may be the oddest of the bunch, since it features the taste of a fruit not indigenous to my area, the yuzu. Yuzu is citrus, likely the cousin to the grapefruit or lemon, if what I detected from the candy is any indication.
Of the bars I have, the Yuzu is the first I've tried that has a genuine chocolate coating. The Kit Kat is dark, but I couldn't say which cacao level, probably in the sixties. On opening the package, the dark coating gives off a faint, salty tang that doesn't really hint at what to expect with the bite. It's indeed a mysterious bar.
The yuzu lends a tartness that strengthens the chocolate. It took a few bites to get used to, but ultimately I found this variety more enjoyable than others I've tried. The aftertaste on this bar brings the spiciness of the pepper. Biting into the wafer bar presents an immediate, odd lemon flavor and graduates to the other sensations. It's like experiencing different courses one at a time.
Would I buy another yuzu bar? Not certain. I would like to sample the rest of my Japanese bounty before deciding on one I must have again. So far, however, this flavor leads the pack.
