Review: Noi Sirius Semi-Sweet

While at Whole Foods in Richmond, I happened upon the chocolate section (who are we kidding, happened upon? I went straight there.) to see a most unusual source for my favorite sweet - Iceland. The Noi Sirius company appears to be the country's primary chocolatier - or, at least, the best known outside the land of Bjork. I'm not one to thumb my nose at imported chocolate, so I purchased the bar, which came wrapped in an opaque, thin white paper that almost resembles wax paper. Two bars came in the pack, 45% semi-sweet, yet the snap I heard on breaking a row of pillows sounded as clear as any dark I've had.

The taste, I thought, was more sweet than semi. Semi-sweet is normally the consistency of Nestle chips in the yellow bag, made for Toll House cookies. Noi's entry in this entry offers a sweeter taste that's almost pure sugar. I don't think I had an ounce and I thought that too much. What's more, the finish is about the same and doesn't bring forth any other flavors - sometimes with sweeter varieties I'll get a hint of citrus or coconut, but not here. Just sweet sweet sickeningly sweet.

I have so much bar left, that I don't think I'll finish them as is. There is a recipe for hot chocolate on the wrapper that I may try, or else I'll break the pillows into chunks for cookies. Perhaps the addition of other ingredients to this bar will offset that sugar high.
