Review: Vosges Red Fire Ice Cream

While searching for a treat at Whole Foods, I happened upon the ice cream section...eh, who are we kidding? I made a beeline there. I craved something cold with the richness of chocolate, something exotic yet not too far out of my comfort zone. One can walk past the freezer section these days to discover a myriad of chocolate concoctions - some organic, others bearing Stephen Colbert's sneering mug. Not yet have I found anything to match the uniqueness of Vosges Red Fire.

That's right, Vosges has turned down the heat to give us ice cream. Avid fan I am of this chocolatier, I have to admit I didn't realize this until I saw it for myself. Whole Foods had four varieties available, and Red Fire - boasting a Mexican flavor with red chilies and cinnamon, proved too tempting to pass.

Now, for those of you who shy from chocolate mixed with savory flavor (I get enough weird looks when I talk about their bacon bar), let me just say right now this isn't a fire shooting from the ears sort of dessert. The chilies here lend a subtle, spicy kick to complement the mild chocolate taste. You really have to like cinnamon, however, and if you favor Mexican style you're going to like this brand. It's not gritty, and while it comes in a pint you likely won't finish the whole thing in one sitting. You shouldn't, anyway. Red Fire is something to savor - I don't think you need anything to go with it.

At the very least, Whole Foods carries this brand. I haven't seen it anywhere else outside of the Vosges website, so if you are near one of the boutiques that sells it give a shot with the warm weather coming.
